J&W GC Columns
Gas Chromatography (GC) columns are at the heart of the gas chromatograph and responsible for the separation process. GC is one of the most important and critical tools in analytical chemistry, because of its effectiveness, sensitivity and ease-of-use. GC columns contain a stationary phase, typically a polymeric material. It is through the interaction between the analytes and this stationary phase within the column that separation of the analyte into their molecular components can occur. There are two types of GC columns: packed columns and capillary columns. Agilent offers over 3500 J&W GC columns. GC column types include fused-silica capillary wall-coated open tubular (WCOT), porous-layer open tubular (PLOT), and packed columns with the best inertness for acids/bases/mixed functional compounds, the lowest bleed levels and tightest column-to-column reproducibility. The new J&W 5Q columns combine industry-leading Ultra Inert performance with Ultra Low-Bleed technology, delivering the new standard for GC/MS column performance and productivity. Ultra Low Bleed Q columns are compatible with any GC/MS system to ensure a seamless fit.

Sample Preparation for Analytical Chemistry
Sample preparation, or sample prep, is an essential part of chromatographic and spectroscopic analyses. The purpose of sample prep is to convert the sample into a form suitable for analysis without significant loss of target compounds. Proper sample preparation removes potentially interfering contamination, which extends the lifetime of your chromatography column and other instrument components. Agilent’s suite of sample preparation products ensure you have the right product for your needs. Our purification and filtration products provide quick and reliable results for repeated analyses and are ideal for busy, high-throughput laboratories. Pre-packaged QuEChERS extraction and dispersive solid phase extraction (dSPE) kits are ideal for food samples and accommodate AOAC and EN methodologies. We also offer a full portfolio of solid supported liquid extraction (SLE), solid phase extraction (SPE), and solid phase microextraction (SPME) products in various chemistries and formats to achieve excellent performance and ensure samples are free of interferences, even with complex matrices.
QuEChERS Kits & Standards for Sample Preparation
Easy-to-use QuEChERS kits enable fast sample preparation. Prepackaged dispersive and extraction kits, extraction salts, and ceramic homogenizers save time and are ideal for application areas such as food, pesticides, and mycotoxins. The QuEChERS (Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged, and Safe) dispersive solid phase extraction (dSPE) technique revolutionized multiresidue, multiclass pesticide analysis and can be performed in just three, simple steps. The first step of QuEChERS is sample extraction using acetonitrile followed by a salting out step to remove water. Agilent offers buffered salts to accommodate various methods such as Association of Official Agricultural Chemists (AOAC) and European Standard (EN) as well as original (unbuffered) salts. QuEChERS extraction kits feature pre-weighed anhydrous salts in sealed packets to allow salts to be added after adding organic solvent to your sample – avoiding an exothermic reaction that can compromise analyte recovery. QuEChERS extraction kits can be purchased as salt packets only, salt packets with 50 mL extraction tubes, or salt packets with 50 mL extraction tubes and ceramic homogenizers. Ceramic homogenizers are effective in breaking up matrix and salt agglomerates for higher extraction recoveries of target analytes. The second step of QuEChERS is sample clean-up. The extract from Step 1 is added to…
Sample Filtration
The Captiva sample filtration portfolio includes products for physical and chemical filtration. Chemical filtration products, such as Captiva EMR with Carbon S and Captiva EMR-Lipid, feature a sorbent for the removal of unwanted matrix interferences. Both Captiva EMR-Lipid and Captiva EMR with Carbon S can be adopted after typical extraction methods, such as QuEChERS extraction, solvent/liquid-liquid extraction, and protein precipitation. They provide highly selective and efficient sample matrix removal with minimal impact on target analyte recoveries. Advantages of using the award-winning Captiva Enhance Matrix Removal (EMR) chemical filtration include improved analyte recovery and reproducibility, reduced matrix effect, and cleaner chromatographic background which improves data quality and reduces reruns. Captiva EMR products also improve instrument sustainability with less instrument downtime. Compared to commonly used methods, Captiva EMR chemical filtration provides a more simplified workflow, saves analyst time and effort, and improves the overall productivity. Captiva physical filtration products utilize a porous membrane and frits for the physical removal of particulates. These products include Captiva filter vials, filter plates and cartridges, and syringe filters. These products are typically recommended for samples prior to instrument injection, especially for LC and LC/MS analysis, to prevent particulates getting into LC column and detection system. Particulate…
Sample Processing Devices & Accessories
Agilent offers a selection of sample processing devices for consistent, simultaneous processing of multiple cartridges or 96-well plates. The positive pressure manifold 48 and 96 processors are alternatives to conventional vacuum processing and offer improved reproducibility. The VacElut SPS 24, VacElut cartridge manifold, and well plate vacuum manifold provide robust sample processing.
Solid Phase Extraction (SPE) Cartridges, Well Plates, Sorbents
Solid Phase Extraction (SPE) is a sample preparation technique with principles similar to those of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for selective adsorption of analytes or interferences from complex matrices. SPE extraction is used for sample clean-up and analyte concentration preceding liquid chromatography (LC), gas chromatography (GC), ion chromatography and other techniques. SPE is considered a cost-effective alternative to or replacement for liquid-liquid extraction (productivity, solvent, waste). The advantages of SPE versus liquid-liquid extraction include improved throughput, decreased organic solvent usage and waste generation, higher and more reproducible recoveries, cleaner extracts, no emulsions, tunable selectivity and automation. Typical applications of SPE include sample clean-up, trace enrichment, desalting, solvent exchange and sample preservation and storage. SPE usage is accelerating in combinatorial synthesis and high-throughput LC-MS analysis. Increase in overall LC-MS usage improves instrument uptime. SPE decreases organic solvents and waste. Agilent offers SPE products in various polarities and chemistries to achieve consistent sample processing. A broad selection of Bond Elut sorbents are available in cartridge and well plate formats and as bulk sorbents. Frits, adapter caps, empty cartridges for custom packing, and online SPE cartridges can also be purchased. Bulk packaging of SPE products provides a cost-effective solution for high-throughput workflows.

Supported Liquid Extraction (SLE)
Supported liquid extraction (SLE) or solid-supported liquid extraction is a cartridge or well-plate based technique that is based on the principles of liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) but delivers some key advantages. SLE extraction uses an inert, high surface area support to serve as a stationary phase for interaction with aqueous samples. An aqueous sample is loaded onto a SLE cartridge or well and allowed time to adsorb to the surface of the solid support. Then, an immiscible organic solvent is passed over the inert material, eluting analytes of interest and leaving behind unwanted matrix like salts and polar interferences. SLE cartridges differ from other cartridge-based extractions, like solid phase extraction (SPE), because the original sample is loaded onto the extraction bed and is not intended to flow through. Therefore, Agilent SLE cartridge and well plate formats are named according to the sample capacity, not bed mass. It is very important to choose the appropriate format based on your total loading sample volume. Ideal for biological, food, and environmental samples, SLE extraction products enable rapid and reliable sample preparation. Because the interactions occur between a liquid and a solid, rather than two liquids, no emulsions are formed. This improves extraction efficiency compared…
